A little bit of context

Life can change in an instant... and when it does it is a powerful reminder that it's important not to take anything for granted, and why we need to treasure every second and hold our loved ones close.

But there’s a problem

Emily was 5 years and growing up fast, just started big school, was making lots of friends and totally loved life, learning, dance and play. Life was good... loving parents... two cool brothers... not a worry in the world. Until, Emily began to lose her eyesight. She was going blind and no one could work out why. Doctors, specialists, medical tests... and then the worst possible news. Emily was diagnosised with Batten's Disease which affects the eyes and the brain. No cure... no treatment... prognosis too much for a child, loving parents and family or friends to bare.

Disease Progression:

0-5 years – Normal / Healthy

6 yrs – loss of vision and mobility issues, mental decay

10 yrs – Dementia/ epilepsy/ motor decay

20-35 years- Complete helplessness and death

Emily is now 7 years of age and her future is not bright.

Here’s what we’re doing about it

Emily's mum and dad are desperate to give their little girl the best quality of life and research suggests maintaining mobility and reducing anxiety and stress can slow motor decline. They want an assistance dog that can help Emily with her mobility, loss of vision, dementia and epilepsy. Emily needs 4 assistance dogs and one guide dog all wrapped into one champion assistance dog. It's a big job and nothing like this have ever been done before in the world that we can find. A Righteous Pup will love Emily with an unconditional love and that will lessen her anxiety, fear, social isolation and be a friend like no other in this storm.

Many organisations have turned Emily away, or their waiting list is just to long... but we just can't ... We just can't say no. Emily's Righteous Pup will give her a quality of life for as long as she has in this world.

The bitter irony is...because of Emily and her disease, we will have a template of how to train and provide ongoing support to Emily and her family, which can be used to help others, in Australia but also around the world. Emily's legacy will allow other children with Batten's disease to have options of support, assistance and quality of life.

*We need to build partnerships internationally so we can access the current science and best practice models for dementia and seizure support assistance dogs.
