A little bit of context
Women's Space works with women and transgender women who are in vulnerable situations or are experiencing marginalisation in the inner city of Sydney with a focus towards women involved in the sex industry. We aim to provide belonging and connection as well as increase safety and choice for women. For more about what we do check out (www.hopestreet.org.au)
What women face
Many of the women we work with have experienced significant hardship and trauma. This includes: poverty, addiction, mental illness, homelessness, domestic violence, PTSD, and language barriers to name a few. Often what compounds these issues is stigma. Stigma from working in the sex industry leads to society making assumptions about their stories and also means many women face discrimination when accessing services.
To empower the women we work with, we're creating a coffee table magazine that will highlight their stories, experiences, strengths and resilience through photos, quotes, artwork and interviews.
It’s an important step in giving women voice; many of whom have often been silenced.
It's giving them the opportunity to tell their own stories; the rawness and reality of what they experience and also the beauty and strength that is weaved throughout.
Once sold, all profits of the book will go directly back into the Women’s Space program. The women will then choose how to use these profits to benefit the program.
