A little bit of context
Gainesville is home to thousands of international students and immigrants from around the world who bring their talents and skills to our community, enrich our cultural life, and make Gainesville a wonderfully diverse town.
But there’s a problem
Coming to a new country with a new culture and language can be challenging and intimidating. Newcomers to Gainesville may have a hard time accessing the services they need and becoming part of this community. We want to provide them with simple, straight-forward information.
Here’s what we’re doing about it
We are creating a series of short videos called GAINESVILLE VIDEO GUIDES.
These videos are usually between 3 and 5 minutes long and explain the basics of life in Gainesville through animations and subtitles. Topics include:
Using the RTS bus system
How to obtain a car and/or bicycle
Thrift shopping for household items and clothes
Finding accommodation in Gainesville
Free, family-friendly events and activities in Gainesville
American laws and customs
The videos will be published on our website and different online platforms and will be available to anyone for free. We work with TESOL experts to make sure that the videos are easy to understand for non-native English speakers.
You can join us
We want to raise $3000 to support this program and produce as many videos as possible. We are also always open to more suggestions for video topics and welcome anyone who would like to join us in creating the videos!
