In our research, we have found that there is consistent contributing problems within rural Australia that are impacting men, they are the socio-economic disadvantages and lack of resources. In our opinion, the two major shortfalls that are not being addressed sufficiently are male suicide and the increasing number of single fathers. Single dads are younger, less educated, and less financially well-off. The increasing suicide attempts are related to understanding what it is to be a father and the breakdown of the family unit.
About the problem
The role of fathers has evolved, and the public now acknowledges their importance not only as breadwinners but also as caregivers. Analysis of long-term time use data shows that fathers are narrowing the still sizable gap with mothers in the amount of time they spend with their children. Moreover, Pew Research surveys find that the public believes that a father's greatest role is to provide values to his children, followed by emotional support, discipline and income support.
It is because of this growing disadvantaged group within our communities which seem to have very little to no support that we as an organisation would like to find and present the resources to help bring health to this group as our focus, however not our only focus. We feel there is more than enough help for women within our community, but the help available to single fathers is very restricted.
Here’s what we’re doing about it
We are going to partner with organisations who have successfully delivered similar services. We expect that clients will be referred to us by other service providers, community corrections or self-referral.
We also want to conduct a range of community programs in the areas of substance abuse, anger management, anxiety, fatherhood and life skills training. There are many ways for our organisation to promote Involved, Responsible and Committed fatherhood.
You can join us
We have been given a building to operate out of. The only catch is that we need to fit it out for occupancy. We have conducted a cost schedule for this project and it is going to cost $70,000.00 to complete. We have contractors ready to go, suppliers have our material requirements.
Our need is for people with a giving heart who would like to help us impact the issues we have raised to join with us in financially contributing to this endeavour.
For supporting us
We indend to keep all our contributors informed of our progress via email.
