The Freya Project began with a single event on January 27, 2017 supporting La Frontera Fund. A direct response to the 2016 election, this event drew over 100 people and raised over $4,000.
We realized then that the simple act of bringing people together to listen to the stories of women and non-binary people could act as a bridge between our community in New York and organizations across the United States working for human rights.
That’s how The Freya Project was born: following this event, we became a reading series that uses storytelling to inspire community-based activism and to directly raise funds for small, under-resourced organizations fighting for human rights. All of our work stems from our belief in voices of women and non-binary people. By telling their stories, we can inspire support and activism for the organizations that need it the most.
Since that one event in January 2017, we have hosted twenty-six fundraising readings in four cities with over 100 readers as a volunteer led organization — and these events have raised over $30,000 for organizations in need.
“The Freya Project is the perfect marriage of art and action. The importance of transforming words into empowerment cannot be overstated and becomes more vital every day”
— Louisa Luna, Freya Project Reader
We are at a critical juncture:
We want to continue to grow, but we need to invest in The Freya Project for this to happen. Which is why we need you.
With your generous support, we will be able to:
- EXPAND OUR PROGRAMMING with more satellite events across the country, inspiring eager activists and connecting them with the organizations on the ground doing the work.
- SUPPORT MORE WOMEN & NON-BINARY WRITERS with unrestricted grants and resources to help them share their work widely
- BECOME A RESOURCE by transforming our website and communication channels into a place that aspiring activists can turn to for organizations to give to, stories that inspire and steps for everyday activism.
Since our first event two years ago until this moment, our goal has been constant: to expand our programming and our reach so that we can and raise more money, help more organizations, amplify the voices of women and non-binary people, and inspire people across the country to action.
With a donation today, you can help us make that happen.
