Dear Friends, our journey for Samothrace Paths has reached its destination. The "Game of Victory," as we liked to call it, with our lonely conpatriot in Louvre in mind, reserved unique emotions for us, especially seeing among you anonymous donors, willing to help us realize the beautiful dream of the Paths and surrounding us with their trust.
The crowdfunding platform, which we opened 50 days ago, is now closed, reporting 97 supporters and 15974 euros. Very close but not exactly to our initial target, our bank accounts, in Eurobank and Alpha Bank, will remain open to donations for a few days more.
Meanwhile we are currently busy with the details of the implementation, which is probably the most demanding part of the project. We feel accountable to you for every euro you have contributed and we want to reassure you that we will not disappoint you.
A high mountain in the sea
Samothrace is a small island, unlike any other in Greece. With Mount Saos, the second highest mountain in Aegean after Crete, it is a destination discovered only by few, who are captured by its countless waterfalls, luscious nature and long history.
Even though its quite unknown, Samothrace has once attracted celebrities of the antiquity, such as Alexander “The Great”, Queen Arsinoe and Herodotus, who were initiated to the Kavirian Mysteries, at the Temple of the Great Gods. Those ceremonies were above race, age, sex and wealth and their multicultural character was what made the island famous, besides its natural beauty and great energy. Today, a fact widely known about Samothrace is the magnificent statue of Nike, showcased in the Louvre Museum in Paris, admired by millions of people every year.
So for thousands of years, humans and animals formed countless paths inside the mountain that pass through rich waterfalls and natural pools, healing springs, prehistoric settlements, Genoa castles and Byzantine churches, revealing its uniqueness along with its rich history.
The thing is...
Mount Saos is not always safe!
Appreciating the beauty of this virgin island, locals have been dreaming of making the mountain accessible and safe for its visitors, by inserting Samothrace in the lists of the best hiking destinations. At the moment, the island's "initiated" enjoy the dozens of natural pools called "vathres" and explore the trails that the goats maintain over the years, but many times, the mountain proves dangerous and difficult to navigate into.
In an attempt to connect the famous statue of Nike with its place of origin, the Hellenic Cultural Center (CCHEL) of Paris and the Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET) along with the Municipality of Samothrace, joined forces to implement on Samothrace the EU award-winning program “Greek Paths of Culture” by ELLET, that restores paths all over Greece of particular natural beauty and historical importance.
In Samothrace, the eight routes of 62km, including the European E6, that will be restored, is a program that promises to the hikers of the world an experience not to be missed.
For Samothrace, this is more than just hiking project, that will make the mountain safe. It is also an opportunity to make its story known, help the local community and attract people around the world to visit the island.
Walk with us
We hope that the crowdfunding campaign Samothrace | Walk with me will contribute to restore some of the glory that Samothrace once had! A small donation from many will make all the difference for this unique island! Join us!
And to thank you
In contrast to a commercial project the support requested is to help a local community by enhancing tourism through an enviromental project. Hence our perks are modest but will provide contributors with an inclusion to a family who has helped to realize this project.
These will include few thank you post cards and photos, some practical gifts especially for summer tourists and some gifts of hand crafted jewlry and local products . The top donors will have their name inscribed locally for posterity.
