Support the Strike!

Stop & Shop workers across New England are striking for a decent contract. The company proposal pushes up healthcare costs for workers while attacking pensions, holidays and sick days, and offering bonuses instead of raises. Meanwhile, Stop & Shop is the most successful supermarket in New England and the international conglomerate it belongs to just made over $2 billion in profits. After months of negotiations the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) has called a strike in response to Stop & Shop’s bad faith dealing and illegal bargaining practices. At this point it’s looking like the fight may not be quick or easy. Stop & Shop workers are members of our community, and we’ve got to have their backs. That is why Pioneer Valley DSA is fundraising to support the UFCW 1459 hardship fund.

What's at Stake?

Pioneer Valley Democratic Socialists of America knows the truth of the phrase “an injury to one is an injury to all.” As one Stop & Shop employee stated, if Stop & Shop can get away with shortchanging their employees it has a “ripple effect” that brings down wages and benefits for everyone. But if the workers of Stop & Shop can hold this line and push back, the ripple works in everyone’s favor.

Where will the money go?

Stop & Shop employees are going without paychecks to stand with supporters outside their stores and ask customers not to cross the picket line. UFCW Local 1459, representing thousands of food and commercial workers across Western Mass, has a hardship fund to help workers sustain this action for as long as it takes to bring Stop & Shop to the negotiating table and win a decent contract. Funds are used to support workers while they are striking without pay, to help cover expenses like rent, health costs, food, etc. What you donate here will go directly to strikers in Western Massachusetts.

This affects all of us. When companies hoard profits and cut employee benefits, they pave the way for other companies to do the same. When Stop & Shop neglects their employees they neglect their customers as well.

Join the Fight

You can help by spreading the word and not shopping at Stop & Shop, and by making a contribution to the workers through the strike fund. Our goal is to raise $10,000 in online donations by May 1st. We hope you’ll join us and show Stop & Shop that our communities stand with workers!

Please note that you can also donate to UFCW Local 1459 directly by cash or checks. Make checks payable to “UFCW Local 1459” and in the memo note “HARDSHIP." Mail your check to UFCW Local 1459 / 33 Eastland Street / Springfield 01109. Finally, since we began this fundraiser, UFCW put up an online hardship fund that goes toward all the locals involved in the strike. That fund can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/supportstopandshopworkers?fbclid=IwAR2qpJEhDV8GcdDpsrcNMa2NC37W86sD49oGRlXb4kRAwpKKhMso1BSMk-g
