Military children are struggling...

Did you know that there are currently 1.2 million military children of active duty members worldwide? The repeated and extended separations of deployments create so many reasons for stress in military children’s lives and the lives of the service member who has to leave. One third of school-age military children show psychosocial behaviors such as being anxious, worrying often, and crying more frequently. To aid in combating that stress, many military units have active Family Readiness Groups to help with resources and support the families at home, but sadly, some units have little or no support. THAT is what our drive is all about! Our goal with “Operation Storybook” is to support the kids at home missing their mom or dad, and give them a way to connect with one another.

Why "Operation Storybook?"

The 348th Engineer Company is currently serving our country in Afghanistan. Among them, there are around 150 children who are missing their mom or dad. This unit has no Family Readiness Group to support the families of those deployed. One BIG need for these famlies, and the children especially, is to have bonding time and connection to their service member while deployed...and what better way to meet that need than through literacy?!

What if there was a way to give our service men and women a way to connect with their kids on a semi-consistent basis? Enter “Operation Storybook!”

1. Beginning in October, we are sending a book every month to nearly 150 kids for 8 months (the remaining duration of the 348th Enginering Company's deployment). That’s a total of 1200 books.

2. Each month, the service men and women will also get a copy of the book to record themselves reading the story to their child. This recording will be sent to the child with their own copy of the book.

We desperately need your help to fund this project. Please consider donating to help us get these books and storybook recordings into these military chidrens' hands. Help create family bonds and connections for these kids and their parent while they are seperated. Thank you so much for your consideration!
