Richmond, VA has one of the highest eviction rates in the country.

Recently the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis published data indicating Richmond has one of the worst rates of eviction in the country.

This is largely due to the rapid rate of gentrification at the hands of greedy slumlords who are content to see the people of Richmond live in squalor as they horde away money that they didn't work to earn. While none of this is new, the people of Richmond have had enough! The people of RVA have come together in the past to support and protect one another.

This practice of mutual aid is a deeply embedded part of Richmond culture, and we continue to foster the spirit of mutual aid as we build infrastructure and organization that aims to reach more people living in this city.

Here’s what we’re doing about it

We took the leftover funds from our cold weather emergency aid efforts last winter and bought a school bus! The bus has since been given a full overhaul. We added a fresh coat of paint, tuned up the motor and removed a large portion of the seats to create room for storage. The bus will be used for the distribution of cold weather supplies such as clothes and sleeping bags, and food. Eventually we aim to further develop the bus to provide free services to the community such as bicycle and electronic device repair.

Our goal is to create a mobile resource center that can be used by multiple organizations collectively to bring those resources and services directly to the people who need them most. Basically, it is going to be a free store on wheels, and it’s nearly ready to roll out! All we need is some more funds to get us there.

You can join us

This project has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of Richmond residents that need support the most, but we need your help to get us there. To be roadworthy, the bus needs to be retitled and insured. It also needs some minor repairs to be able to pass inspection. We expect those expenses to amount to approximately $2500 for the upcoming year, and that is the amount we hope that you’ll help us raise in support of this very exciting and beneficial project! We already have a massive load of winter clothing and other supplies to distribute this winter, but this will be made much easier by getting the bus up and running!

Perks for this fundraiser have not been decided yet but they will be posted soon!
