Be a Part of Our Journey
What happens when you put 80 women all passionate about science, gender equality and the state of our planet on board a ship bound for Antarctica?
In January 2019, we're hoping to find out. But we can't get there without your support.
We are Homeward Bounds first Mother-Daughter team who are among the 80 participants selected from around the world (representing 28 countries) to take part in Homeward Bound 2019. This is an intensive 12-month leadership program for women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine) culminating in a 3-week voyage set against the backdrop of Antarctica.
Both educators, Karen working with Primary School students (5-12 years) and Sarah with Secondary School students (12-18 years) we aim to empower and enable all students but in particular young women with the knowledge, power, and self-belief to make positive influences on the planet.
Educators play a pivotal role in the lives of young learners, not only through facilitating learning but acting as role models and offering mentorship. Throughout the year and upon our return we hope to target different areas of education. Our initial focuses are outlined below though we envisage that these will grow and develop through the program and beyond.
Karen aims to bring into the classroom more connections with scientists who can act as role models for students. This would be done by developing a global network of scientists and schools that will collaborate through focused areas of study via a purpose-built website.
Sarah aims to influence and develop young female leaders through her impacts as an educator and beyond. She will work with students and teachers to lift the opportunities for women in STEMM. She aims to reach beyond the classroom to influence the wider community to work collaboratively towards a sustainable future.
Please help to support us in this initiative as we see the value of education as underpinning change and being the catalyst for engaging more women in STEMM.
Be a part of our journey to initiate positive change.
Mother Nature Needs Her Daughters
There has never been a more urgent need for a different approach to leadership, as evidence continues to grow of human-induced global warming and ineffective leadership and collaboration.
Science touches every part of our present and future. It is mission critical that women are in an equal measure, visible and leading, in science. Right now, there is a glaring absence of women in decision making on issues that affect the state of our planet, estimates suggesting as low as 7 - 9%.
Homeward Bound wants to put our best leaders forward where they are needed, and right now that's women in massive numbers. If women in science are supported to lead, it ensures a better future for us all.
- Regions of Antarctica are currently showing amongst the fastest responses to climate change seen anywhere on the planet
- The study of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, and their roles in the climate system provides critical insights into global-scale change and the influence of human activities on environmental change
- The continent is iconic as a wild, beautiful and unique environment that has captured the imagination of many leaders in the past
- By taking this journey together Homeward Bound envisions the experience will create strong bonds, inspire action and lead to extraordinary collaborations between the women
