Zara’s House is a not-for-profit organisation which supports refugee women living in Newcstle and the Hunter region. We are a place of welcome whose aim is to alleviate social exclusion, where refugee women can meet Australian women, share hospitality, ideas, culture, learning and local opportunities.
Resettlement in Australia is particularly challenging for women without functional literacy skills in any language. For the last two years, we have provided these women with programs in literacy (mother tongue and English), preparation for the Australian citizenship test, sewing, and preparation for a driver’s license. In addition, we have provided child-minding services so that mothers with fulltime caring responsibilities for young children can make use of our services. Due to our central location, Zara's House is easily accessible to the majority of the Syrian, Iraqi, and Afghan refugee families who have settled in the Jesmond, Wallsend, North Lambton and Birmingham Gardens areas. We believe that this rare combination of adult literacy education and childcare programs contributes to reducing the isolation commonly experienced by these mothers.
We hired a derelict church and hall which is now for sale. We need to raise another $100,000 by Friday and this place will be ours forever, to serve the refugee women and children in Newcastle.
You can help us reach our target by providing a tax-deductible donation - any amount helps! Thank you for your support.
