Habitat destruction has caused koala populations in NSW to drop by 20-50% in the last 20 years. The koalas on the Mid North Coast of NSW are some of the most genetically diverse wild koalas, with populations of national significance. To protect them from extinction, we need a bold solution. The Great Koala National Park will stabilize their habitat to allow their populations to regrow. At the same time, it will build a sustainable ecotourism industry for future generations!
Koalas are in serious decline. Habitat loss is one of the main causes. The best koala habitat is in our coastal forests where deforestation and logging are widespread. Australia's public native forests contain some of the best remaining koala habitat. Protecting these forests will make a real difference, not just for koalas but for many of Australia's unique plants and animals.
The Great Koala National Park (GKNP) would see 175,000ha of publicly owned state forests added to existing protected areas, to form a 315,000ha reserve in the Coffs Harbour hinterland. It would be the flagship of a suite of proposed koala reserves between Port Stephens and the Queensland border. The GKNP would be Australia’s first large national park dedicated to protecting our global treasure. It would protect koala habitat in five local government areas: Coffs Harbour, Clarence Valley, Bellingen, Nambucca and Kempsey.
The Great Koala National Park is a well developed community-driven proposal. Now it’s time to tell the world about it! We need your help to promote the park to the broader public’s attention ahead of the 2019 Elections. The Bellingen Environment Centre has assembled a team of professional filmmakers, campaigners and ecologists to create a suite of video and media content to promote this cause. Through a bold and savvy social media campaign, we will spread the message far and wide about how to protect our koalas and endangered animals, capitalise on our unique natural environment for the growth of outdoor adventure sports, tourism and local business, creating new opportunities for future generations. It’s a win-win-win.
