The Alaska Climate Action Network (AK CAN!) is connecting Alaskans from all corners of the state who share a deep concern about climate change and our energy future.
Since 2014, AK CAN! has steadily gained momentum as an adhoc statewide grassroots movement. This winter we secured 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and built a visionary Board of Directors and Advisory Council. Now, we're ready to take it to the next level.
With your help, AK CAN! intends to pursue the following goals:
1) Green New Deal (AK New Energy Future): build statewide support for the Green New Deal and lay the groundwork for Alaska’s full participation by working with communities through local climate action planning and other initiatives. A statewide Climate Summit and New Energy Showcase/teach-ins to foster the exchange ideas are also in the works.
2) 100% Renewable Alaska (AK100): launch the AK Utility Member Action Project and continue to chart a clear and just transition to a 100% renewable energy future built on the efficient use of Alaska's world-class solar, wind, geothermal, tidal/wave, and pumped-hydro energy storage resources;
3) Oil & Gas Accountability Project (OGAP): push to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and divest Alaska's Permanent Fund from risky investments that are costing Alaskan's $ billions. We'll continue to watchdog and push industry regulators to reduce waste (ie. dangerous methane emissions) and work with the People's Tribunal to bring relief to Front Line communities facing a growing litany of impacts from climate change and expanding fossil fuel development;
The science is clear: we must cut emissions in half by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050 to avoid runaway climate disruption. We have the technology, expertise and unmatched spirit of innovation Alaskans are famous for. Let's build the political will for rapid and deep change through a statewide movement that our elected leaders can't ignore.
It is time to come together as Alaskans to fight climate change, defend our way of life and embolden the industries of the future.
Your contribution will help build and sustain this movement and we are eternally grateful for whatever you can give today.
In solidarity & gratitude!
