A little bit of context

This is my first picture book and I wrote it with my grandson Hayden in mind. You see, like many children Hayden is scared to go to bed. His dad has all sorts of trouble trying to convince him that nothing is lurking, behind the DOOR, under the BED, inside the CUPBOARD, and in the DRAWER.

This book is not just for the kids but it is for the parents, grandparents, and carers out there. This is a fun rhyming picture book that will delight children aged 3 - 6 years old, and make bedtime a fun, happy experience.

The great thing about donating to help publish Hayden's Bedtime is that for each book pre-purchased and for the life of the book $2 will be donated to the Port Macquarie Hastings Domestic & Family Violence Specialist Service. They provide crisis accommodation and support services to women and their children or single women escaping domestic violence or in crisis.

But there’s a problem

Publishing a book is an expensive process. To make a picture book appealing to children it has to have wonderful pictures that the children can relate to. My illustrator Brett Curzon has done a wonderful job with the book cover capturing Hayden's likeness.

The upfront cost of engaging an illustrator adding the text to the page through graphic design, and the cost of printing all adds up.

This is a new concept to crowdfund a book and I hope it is a new and exciting pathway for creative practitioners toward building a career around what they enjoy doing best, creating.

Traditional publishing sees no cost to the author as the publishing house pays the full cost, and the author and illustrator receive royalties on sales.

Having control over where the money goes will enable creatives like myself to make a better living out of what we produce and it gives me the opportunity to help a well-deserved community service for women and children.
