Castlemaine and surrounds is a vibrant and diverse community located in the Central Goldfields in Victoria. Despite its reputation as a progressive region, our small town has been hit very hard by the recent debate on marriage equality and amidst an ongoing fight for the rights of our local LGBTIQ community. This hasn’t been aided by our local government’s recent decision to not visibly support the local LGBTIQ community, with a motion to raise the rainbow flag being voted down by our councillors. What has ensued has been a dangerous and divisive local debate that has brought homophobia, biphobia and transphobia to the surface. It has sent shock-waves through our community.
A huge concern throughout this time has been the impact on our local LGBTIQ youth
Our aim is to let our local LGBTIQ youth know that they are loved, supported and deserve an amazing night to be themselves! And in doing so, we can say a big NO to homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in our community.
What better way to celebrate who you are than spending a night out with your mates at the end of the year where you can dance how you want, dress how you want and bring who you want.
With that in mind…..
The Theatre Royal Castlemaine in consultation with the local high school’s diversity group, will be presenting THE GLITTERING GOLDFIELDS QUEER FORMAL in December 2017 at the iconic Theatre Royal.
It will be an all-things-rainbow and all-things-glitter event for people aged 12-20 years living in the goldfields region and beyond. The event will provide a safe environment for queer youth and their friends to have a fun night out. There will be food, DJs, performers and a dance comp.
The formal is a drug, alcohol and smoke free event – and will be supervised by a passionate and dedicated team of adult volunteers (known affectionately as THE GOLDFIELDS GUARDIANS).
And did we mention the glitter? There will be glitter. Like, a lot of glitter.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We are launching a funding campaign so we can make this event the best possible night out for these amazing kids!
Funds will go towards:
- DJs, Performers and MC fees
- Lighting and Decoration
- Promotion & Marketing
- Infrastructure – additional fencing and toilets
- Venue costs
- Photo Booth and Camera Team to capture the magic
- Glitter, glitter, glitter!
By donating to the formal you are making a significant contribution to a very special community event that will celebrate the wonderful diversity of our local queer youth at a time when it is needed most.
