The girl you see above is Isatu. As a little girl she was bright, clever, and a prefect at school. But when she was ten years old, her impoverished parents almost sold her into marriage.
“I was so very young. Too young,” Isatu says sadly.
Her story could have ended like so many girls’ stories have before. That's because a girl born in Sierra Leone, where Isatu lives, is more likely to be a child bride than she is to attend high school.
But Isatu beat the odds. She was brave enough to stand up for herself and refuse the marriage, and is now thriving at school thanks to a scholarship from One Girl.
One Girl is on a mission to educate one million girls across Africa – just a fraction of the estimated 63 million girls around the world who are denied an education every year.
For every year a girl can stay in school, her income will increase between 10 and 25 percent. And for every dollar she earns, she'll reinvest 90 percent of it back into her family. She’s less likely to be sold as a child bride, and she can marry later and have children when she’s ready.
And the best bit? She’s more likely to educate her own children – creating a ripple effect of opportunity that will benefit generations to come.
Because when you educate a girl, everything changes. Giving girls access to education is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty.
Will you help more girls like Isatu?
Your donation will have a lasting impact on the lives of girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda by funding One Girl's four girl-focused education projects:
- Scholarships to provide girls with everything they need for school – all the way through to graduation;
- Business Brains training to equip girls with the business skills and financial literacy they need to earn an income while they’re in school and beyond;
- School Awesomisation to improve schools – many of which are falling apart or unsafe – through the construction of new facilities like classrooms and toilets; and
- Launch Pad to give girls access to affordable, biodegradable sanitary pads, and educate them on menstrual health and hygiene.
