COVID-19 WILL BE DEVASTATING FOR ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we sadly (and with urgency) anticipate it will affect the Aboriginal Blackfulla community in Victoria in devastating ways.
We expect health complications, housing insecurities and food vulnerabilities to be exacerbated due to the disproportionate levels of discrimination experienced by us. Many members of our communities are already living with disabilities, debilitating traumas, chronic illness, and/or compromised immune systems as well as housing insecurities due to the systemic effects of colonisation and displacement.
As of April 8th, there have been 5,956 cases reported in Australia with 45 reported deaths. It is only a matter of time before our community is affected. It is our intention to be proactive in helping prepare our communities for this public health crisis.
THAT'S WHY WE'VE SET UP THIS FUND
We have set up this campaign in response to the distress, anxiety and uncertainty expressed by members of our communities. We are also very aware of the large systematic gaps not currently met by organisations and government services.
We are seeking donations to provide:
- Food vouchers or supplies for members of our community experiencing food insecurity.
- Petrol vouchers so that grocery deliveries can be made to immuno-compromised, those living with disabilities, chronic illness and eldery members.
- Essential health and hygiene supplies.
- Household cleaning products, as well as, sanitising products.
- Masks and gloves to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.
WHO WE ARE
The COVD-19 Victorian First Nations Mutual Aid Fund is run by a group of concerned Blackfulla community members. We are grandmothers, mothers, sisters, cousins, community organisers, healthcare professionals and counsellors who have been supporting and advocating for our communities on a grass-roots level for generations.
If you are a Blackfulla in Victoria in need of any of the above, please fill out this request form: https://tinyurl.com/rjje4sf
Please forward any queries to [email protected].
The COVID-19 Blackfulla Mutual aid fund is inspired by other international and local mutual aid funds set up to support communities in need. Namely, we are inspired by the COVID-19 Mutual Aid Fund for LGBTQI+ BIPOC Folk.
