Who Am I?
If you had asked me growing up,
“What do you want to become?”
The answer would have been clear as day. I wanted to become a medical doctor. That was the ONE & ONLY thing I aspired to be, but it was not popular for girls to pursue STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine).
STEMM was for men like my dad. It was a far more challenging and competitive environment for women and girls, with very few women to look up to as role models in the field.
Nonetheless, the STEMM seed in me was firmly planted and was waiting for the right environment for it to grow. I excelled in all academic areas in my early years, with a continued focus on STEMM subjects. However, my final average at the end of high school was not enough to land me in the medical field I had aspired to grow up. It felt like my dream had come to an end before it had even begun.
Going into university, I still wanted to pursue STEMM despite my initial setback. So, rather than the Medical Science field I had aspired to take, I switched to Natural Sciences instead.
I didn’t realise it at the time, but what felt like a broken dream was an opportunity to land among the stars.
To my surprise, I loved natural sciences and excelled! One road led to another and I ended up pursuing a Masters in Geo-Spatial Sciences. Then this road leads to yet another and I completed a Doctorate.
Things took a different turn, but I achieved my childhood dream of becoming a doctor.!
I AM A DR OF THE SPATIAL KIND!
Why Me? Why STEMM?
I want to wave the Science flag to all young and aspiring scientists out there. I want to show that there is a space for you in STEMM if you do not give up.
One day you will be an inspiration to others and join the millions of people around the globe making a difference to our ever-changing world. The world is relying on you to become the next generation of innovators.
The Homeward Bound Leadership Initiative
Homeward Bound is a global 12-month leadership initiative for women with a background in STEMM. It aims to equip a 1000-strong collaboration of women who are in leadership roles or aspire to leadership, to increase the visibility of women in both academia and industry.
This 12-month program includes online learning to increase leadership capacity, strategic capability and collaboration, and culminates in a meeting of all 100 participants in Ushuaia, Argentina before embarking on a life-changing expedition to one of the most ecologically sensitive and inspiring areas on Earth, Antarctica, at the end of 2019.
Regions of Antarctica are showing the fastest responses to some of the global sustainability problems we currently face. Antarctica offers an unparalleled opportunity to observe firsthand the influence of human activities on the environment and provide critical insights into the global-scale change required.
This iconic environment has captured the imagination of leaders in the past and the expedition experience of the Antarctic component of the Homeward Bound program creates strong bonds between participants.
I Need You..!
I am honoured to be taking part in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Thanks to the generous support of Homeward Bound leadership and sponsors, a portion is being provided in-kind.
Your donation will help me reach my goal to be a STEMM influencer. Any contribution is greatly appreciated!
