About APIAHiP

Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) is a volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to leading in the preservation and awareness of Asian and Pacific Islander American historic sites and heritage across the United States and its territories. Since our founding in 2007, APIAHiP has worked to create greater awareness of historic sites and cultural resources significant to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (APIAs) with advocacy efforts and educational programs, while building a vast network of supporters.

How we elevate and safeguard our places and stories

Our National Forum was created when Asian and Pacific Islander America grassroots leaders saw that our places and stories were not being represented/recognized in the field of historic preservation. While there are many grassroots efforts in preserving important places and resources associated with Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, there was little to no representation in terms of leadership, research, and landmark designations. Did you know that less than 8% of resources listed on the National Register of Historic Places and less than 5% of National Historic Landmarks are associated with APIAs and other underrepresented groups? Our vision is to change that to elevate and safeguard our places and stories for future generations.

National APIA Historic Preservation Forum

The 2020 National APIA Historic Preservation Forum is designed to address the need in supporting historic and cultural preservation efforts that are important for APIAs by bringing together experts in the fields of preservation, community development, history, and the arts with community groups, practitioners, and students.

The 2020 Forum will be held in Honolulu, Hawai'i and features educational panels, tours of historic sites and neighborhoods, film screenings, and group discussions about the diverse stories of APIAs in US history and at historic sites like East West Center, Honouliuli National Historic Site, and 'Iolani Palace.

This Forum allows individuals and organizations to convene from across the nation (including US territories) to learn best practices, share challenges and strategies, and support our work in preserving, elevating, and safeguarding our important cultural resources.
