Pag Asa's Story..

This is PAG ASA (means "Hope" in English, we named him this because we believe that there's hope for a better life for him), an8 year old neglected stray Aspin with a hollow face.

He had a previous owner but just like any other bad owners, he was thrown away when his condition worsened. From a small cut that worsened and turned into tumor that ate his face away, his previous bad owners, disgusted discarded him and that day marked the painful day of his life where the people dear to him turnedaway fromhim.

3 years he suffered on this condition and survived by scavenging food. Everytime he goes back to where he lived before with previous owner because he's a smart dog, kids and other people would throw rocks on him to shoo him away, saying he smells bad and ugly..

Until a group of concerned animal lovers found him posted on a social media website and even far away rescued and funded his treatment. He was rescued last June 03, 2016 from the streets of Cavite, Philippines.

But there’s a problem

Diagnosed with malignant mast tumor that's eating away his face and spreading, he's currently undergoing Chemotherapy. He is fighting through, he eats a lot and wags his tail whenever our friends would visit him.

But.. with just me (Dessa) and the help of a friend (Maffeo) alone funding his ongoing vet treatment, we are afraid that by just us alone won't be enough to support his future set of Chemotherapy andFace Reconstructive Surgery.

The people behind and what we’re doing about it

I, Dessa, at the age of 22 started helping andfunding rescued animals all the way from Australia to the Philippines last May this year. I've been into animal welfare since before but became more active when I experienced losing my pet back home. He ran away, experienced cruelty and got ran over but thankfully survived and we got reunited with him again. This was a Wake-up call for me and made me realized more how about the other dogs/cats who are neglected, those strays trying to survive off the streets and those being abused with no voice at all and means to defend themselves.

I decided to take the road less traveled. I started getting help from people to rescue animals in dire condition and from there took responsibility of supporting their treatment. I'm just a normal animal lover that survives day-to-day expenses but made up my mind and right now I'm funding my other rescued animals in the Philippines (22 dogs) who I'm solely supporting and created Paws Pacific Rescue page to post updates and happy endings of these unfortunate animals before but now happy animals that have a better life.

Pag Asa is just one of these rescued animals whom I'm helping together with friends. I've been sharing non-stop Pag Asa's story, updates and been asking friends to share and contribute for his treatment despite all the difficulty but for his sake and for him to experience a good life, I don't mind.

How you can help us

With Pag Asa's running bill, latest bill we received was last 03 of Aug 2016 of $1,339, we were able to settle $911 with our own money and a few help from friends.

Remaining bill we owe of $428 is increasing since 03 of August until today and the next coming days. His vet bills is getting bigger day by day due to confinement fees per day, medications and ongoing Chemotherapy. Future expenses on his Face Reconstructive Surgery or Prosthetic is not even included yet that would cost us thousands of dollars.

After his Chemotherapy, Pag Asa will be assessed with regards to his Prosthetic surgery and we will surely post an update here.

Pag Asa's condition: CONDITION AFTER 1ST CHEMOTHERAPY.

After speaking to Doc Jomar the other day upon regarding Pag Asa's condition, this is what we've talked about:

The 1st chemotherapy last 12 Aug showed improvements, as per vet and if you can see on the photos (and the video just below this post), wound is cleaner, nodules minimised and lessened.

Pag Asa is eating well and active, responding positively with the medications. He is fighting! Unfortunately, Pag Asa's case is complicated as it's not just one big tumor that can be removed easily by chemo but the tumor has spread over his body thus enlargement of the gaping hole on his face.

Vet advised continuous chemo for as there might be a relapse if stopped as his tumor is malignant, which means it can re-occur again. We have decided that we will move on to 2nd chemo since vet advised that Pag Asa is strong enought to undergo another one.

After Pag Asa's 2nd chemo, he'll be brought to Doc Nielsen's clinic for assessment with regards to plastic surgery or prosthetic to know if he would advise how many sets of chemo still has ot be done. Doc Jomar is willing to sit down with Doc Nielsen so they can discuss the treatment he's done and the future treatments to do. We are glad to know that everyone is helping hand in hand for Pag Asa's recovery. Looking forward to more people who can extend help for our strong big boy.

An update of Pag Asa's condition.

Pag Asa has been under my care in our facility ASK A VET ANIMAL MEDICAL CLINIC.

Thru the help of Ms Dessa Mae Ragudo and Ms. Korina Sanchez. We have renewed confidence that Pagasa will recover from his condition.
Lab findings suggest a TUMOR on his face which has shown and found out to be Malignant. Efforts have begun to control progression of this tumor. We have started his first chemo last week and has shown postive progress (as shown in recent pictures)
Ms. korina sanchez has sent chinese and herbal meds for Pagasa to help control the wounds and help hasten wound healing.
2nd round of chemo treatment will be done after 3 days. Pag asa is very active, and has a very good appetite. Which is ideal healthwise as we do the chemo treatments.
Hopefully this continues for the next treatment regimen. Antibiotics and supplementsand blood tests are done continuously to support the open nasal cavity which is very sensitive to infection.
Our goal is complete resolution of the tumor and facial reconstruction of Pagasa. Everybody's support and prayers would be a great help for our cause. Pictures below are posted. Thank You - Dr.Jomar (Attending Veterinarian)

Thank you so much Rui Mori and JC Cruz for visiting Pag Asa yesterday (Aug 27) and extending help. Pag Asa has a voracious appetite and very active.

Chinese Medicine is being put on his wounds while Moringa "Malunggay" powder is being added on his food as well to aid him with his Chemotherapy and make him stronger. As you can see on the photos below, the green stuff around Pag Asa's face that's the Moringa powder which reached his face because the food splatters since he has no protection from mouth to forehead and he is a voracious eater. 2nd cycle of Chemo was done today and Doc Jomar Vet will update us here later on regarding this.

PAG ASA DIARY - ASSESSMENT FOR PROSTHETIC ; Sept. 09, 2016

Hi, I'm Pag Asa. Maybe you are wondering how am I doing now? I'm healthy and my vet is taking good care of me.

I was transported to my prosthetic doctor, Doc Nielsen at Vets in Practice yesterday for assessment. I was so excited to know that very soon I will have a new face again! Honestly, this gaping hole is really annoying me, whenever I eat food, it splatters all over my face. How frustrating is that?

So this new doctor which I saw for the 1st time was checking my face, I was really happy, I couldn't contain it but hey I have to be behaved and waited patiently. But then I heard he told my carers that the annoying tumor on my face needs to be eradicated completely before I can have my new face (prosthetics) made. this made me sad that I have to undergo another chemo (That's how humans call it but men it was painful!) until that irritating tumor goes away. Though I was assured by my carers that they will always take care of me no matter what and people would still visit me! Oh how I love people. Hey! Just look at the bright side, after this I will have a new face again.

A catch though, for me to continue more chemo session, I need help. I know, I've been asking and a few have expressed help which I really am thankful for. Woof thanks! But hope you don't give up on me? Just 1 or 2 people alone who are currently funding me isn't enough for my costly vet bill. *sigh* Wish I can kick this tumor away soon! Oh I can't wait to go home! But don't get me wrong, I love my vet Doc J but surely I would love to have my own family too which would only be possible until I finish all my chemo session. Hope you can extend help!

PAG ASA DONE WITH 3RD CHEMO : Sept 27, 2016

Hi everyone, you might have been wondering about our big boy, Pag Asa. 3rd chemo of Pag asa was delayed despite Doc Jomar's intention of speeding up his cycles because Pag Asa has been itching due to a mild case of mange and had diarrhea.

But nothing to worry, his mange was addressed and treated, while Fecalysis showed presence of worms that caused the diarrhea, Pag asa was Dewormed already and well enough for his chemo session. He had his 3rd Chemo last week; Sept 22, Thursday.

Our big boy is still the same, showing good appetite and active while on Chemo session. With the nodules on his face, it's pretty much clear but 1 or 2 nodules is still present and we have to make sure it is all smooth and cancer free as what plastic surgeon vet Doc Nielsen requires before doing prosthetic on him. PAG ASA UPDATE - October 18, 2016

Hi everyone, I spoke to vet today about Pag Asa.

On his last Chemo session, Doc Nielsen of VIP (the vet who would do face prosthetic on him) advised to put the chemo meds directly to the surface but Pag Asa was in pain so they decided to stop it and do chemo thru IV instead.

The nodules on his face weren't 100% clear yet which is a bit hard to achieve with Pag Asa's case as his tumor is malignant but our vets are trying their best. Good news is that LEFT SIDE of his face is looking good and almost no nodules in there but the RIGHT SIDE of his face has still a couple of small nodules and 1 big elevated nodule that's a size of a marble which we want to be cleared out.

As usual Pag Asa has a good appetite, active and fluid levels are normal. We are still waiting for Doc Nielsen's go signal if how clean and clear he wants it to be until Pag Asa will be turned over to them for assessment for his future face prosthetic.

We are also still looking for a TEMPORARY FOSTER CARER FOR PAG ASA. Everyone who can be or might know a candidate kindly send us a message here. We badly need someone who can give him love and freedom to play around while he's undergoing Chemo session. It would give him more support to fight and keep moving on. Thank you.

PAG ASA after 3rd Chemo session. As you can see it's so much cleaner, nodules are almost minimized although that 1 big nodule size of a marble is visible and that's what we want to minimize or eradicate. Attached is the Chemo session timeline of Pag Asa below as well.

So far everyone, PAG ASA IS REALLY FIGHTING THROUGH! He is responding to Chemo meds well, active, with huge appetite and wags his tail when petted.

PAG ASA THE FIGHTER - Oct 25 2016

Please bear with a rather long post and sorry for the graphic photos below but I would want to show everyone how Pag Asa's been faring and the beautiful transformation he's undergoing.

Our fighter, big boy Pag Asa who was subjected to unfathomable cruelty and neglect of barbaric humans has been doing great with his treatment.He's just done with his 4th Chemo session last Oct 24 and as always responding to chemo meds well. His reaction to meds was good, no signs of weakness, the marble-sized nodule on the right side of his face has minimised as you can see on the photos below. Wound is looking so much cleaner with barely visible nodules.

Pag Asa isn't cancer-free yet and he'd probably need a few more sessions until he is or not (which I'm praying not to happen). I have faith that he would be cancer free with just a few set of Chemo sessions although it would be hard due to the malignant tumor cells but I can see hope since he's been showing positive signs such as good appetite and positive response to meds.

1 set of Chemo costs 2,500 or $68 and boarding fee per day costs 300 or $9. Everyone we badly need help to sustain Pag Asa's treatment plus his future Face Prosthetic which would be costly.

PAG ASA TRANSFER TO AKF 11/11

Hi everyone, Pag Asa along with another rescue were transferred to a sanctuary to be temporarily fostered and will continue treatment over there. I can't thank enough Pag Asa's skilled vet Doc Jomar and #AskaVet for looking after him for the past few months since he first arrived last June. They took really good care of him and made a big difference to how he looks now and to his health. They were able to clear away almost to none tumors on his face.

I've decided to bring Pag Asa to Animal Kingdom Foundation so he can experience playing and running around a vast grassy land while undergoing Chemo sessions until he's ready for his face prosthetic and soon will be adopted by me and be brought to Australia hopefully. Thank you so much everyone for continuing to extend help for our strong big boy. For now we were able to fully paid his vet bill thanks to everyone here!

UPDATE ON OUR BIG FIGHTER PAG ASA 14 Jan 2017

I spoke to AKF's vet yesterday after work regarding Pag Asa. As suggested by vet's colleague, they are planning to bring the dog to UP Veterinary Hospital for the biopsy and/or histopathology to determine if nodules are still malignant. They have sent an e-mail to UP and are waiting for their reply as to how much the cost would be. I've asked vet if they can bring Pag Asa there as walk-in patient instead to speed up the process.

Pag Asa had his 5th Chemo last year Dec 6. He responded well to chemo meds as expected with our big boy fighter. Vet told me his face is cleaner and nodules doesn't increase in size or spread made me really happy. As usual his wounds are being cleaned and flushed regularly 2 or 3x a day using mineral water. He's on Lamb diet as well but had to decrease food portion as he's gaining so much weight.

I've expressed to vet how much I want for Pag Asa to survive and that I'm interested to adopt this boy and bring him to Australia. Vet told me that everyone at AKF and their clients know our boy and they are very careful and hands-on on looking after him which I really appreciate. Thank you again AKF and Doc Aris.

PAG ASA GETTING READY FOR LAB TESTS Feb 12, 17

I received new updates from AKF vet yesterday that Pag Asa has cloudiness in a small area of his left eye. It is initially diagnosed as a cataract formation. When he was still staying at Ask-a-Vet before I was made aware of this as well due to the wide hole on his face that it was affecting also his eye. I'm praying to God that this is nothing and won't be a big hindrance to his recovery.

For proper diagnosis of his condition, he will be brought to UP veterinary hospital this coming Monday, February 13 for consultation. He will also undergo test for his blood chemistry, biopsy and CBC as I wanna know if the tumors are still malignant.

Let's hope everyone that Pag Asa will be alright and his test would come out good. I will post as soon as I was given update. Will closely monitor Pag Asa tomorrow during downtime at work.
