FAQ

The General Stuff

Chuffed.org is a crowdfunding platform for socially-conscious projects from around the world. We support individuals, not-for-profits, social enterprises and community groups to run awesome crowdfunding campaigns, all 100% free.

100% of the donation that a donor makes on Chuffed.org goes straight to the not-for-profit or social enterprise. Chuffed.org offers donors the opportunity to contribute on top of this to support fund our organisational cost.

The donor can reduce this down to a minimum of our credit card fees which are currently 2.0%-2.9% + 30c per transaction (depending on what country your campaign is from). If that’s a bit too much maths, here’s an example:

Example 1

  1. A generous donor clicks on $25 donation
  2. At the payment page, the donor pays a minimum of the $25 + the transaction fees (80c) = $25.80
  3. The not-for-profit receives $25 (100% of the donation)
  4. Our payment provider receives 80c
  5. Chuffed.org receives nothing

Example 2

  1. A very generous donor clicks on $25 donation
  2. At the payment page, the donor pays the $25 + an optional contribution to Chuffed.org of $2 = $27.00
  3. The not-for-profit receives $25 (100% of the donation)
  4. Our payment provider receives 80c (their transaction fee)
  5. Chuffed.org receives $1.20 (100% of which goes towards supporting more campaigns get off the ground)

We’ve found that when donors realise that we’re a social enterprise and what they contribute to Chuffed.org goes into supporting more great projects, they’re more than happy to throw in what they can.

All campaigns on Chuffed.org are 'Keep what you get' campaigns. For ‘Keep what you get’ campaigns, the campaign receives all funds donated to it by the deadline, regardless of whether or not they have reached their funding target. We don't penalise you for not hitting your target.
Team Crowdfunding is a new concept that blends the best of peer-to-peer fundraising with crowdfunding. Team Crowdfunding lets you set up a normal crowdfunding campaign with several sub-campaigns for each of your team members below it. That means everyone on the team gets their own page, which all sum up to the total on the main page. You can read more here.

We have three tests on the type of campaigns we accept. Is it for a social cause that fits into one of our eight categories (Social Enterprise, Refugees and Asylum Seekers, Health and Disability, Community, Environment, International Development, Animal Welfare or Social Welfare)? Is it a 'project' that has a finite outcome? Is it run by a real person or organisation? We're also accepting a limited number of personal medical/health related campaigns as well.

Note that while we do accept social cause campaigns from religious organisations, we don't accept campaigns that are explicitly about promoting any particular religion.

The short answer is yes - we operate for the benefit of our community. Directors of Chuffed.org are obliged to consider not just the financial impacts of their decisions but also the social, environmental and community impacts.

Definitely not. Any card details you provide are processed and stored by our PCI-compliant payment partners, Stripe and PayPal. We do not store any of your credit card details on our servers.
It depends. If you are an Australian tax resident donating to an organisation in Australia that has tax-deductible (DGR) status, and you don't receive a substantial perk, the donation is normally tax deductible. Where the organisation has asked us to, we will issue you a receipt you can use for your tax return. For US, UK, Canada, and European campaigns, the organisation may choose to issue you a tax deductible receipt, but it's up to them to decide if they wish to.
No you don’t. We don’t want to put up any walls to you contributing to projects you love. When you donate, we’ll create a Chuffed.org account for you automatically and email you the details – this lets you track all the great projects you’ve contributed to. If you’ve given previously with Chuffed, we’ll automatically put any new donations onto your account.
Perks are cool rewards that the not-for-profit offers to donors in exchange for different donation levels. Perks can vary from social media shout outs, to unique experiences to pre-release offers and anything in between.

I'm a not-for-profit or social enterprise

Anyone who wants funding for a socially-conscious project run by an Australia, US, UK, Canada, Dutch or Belgium-based person or organisation. You have to be:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Fundraising for a defined ‘project’

Generally we accept projects from individuals, social enterprises, not-for-profits and community groups. We use a common sense definition of ‘socially-conscious’ in assessing projects.

Yep, we can take donations from anyone around the world, as long as they have a Visa, Mastercard or American Express. We’ve taken donations from the USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Indonesia, India, France, Sweden, Japan, Brazil, Myanmar and dozens more countries.
Just shoot us an email at [email protected] with a brief one-paragraph description of your project and we’ll tell you whether you’re eligible to run a project on Chuffed.

Getting your campaign onto Chuffed.org is simple and easy. Just head over to our Start your campaign page and we’ll get the process started. You'll need to submit it to us for approval before you launch, which normally take 24-72 hours.

We’ve put campaigns up and live in a matter of hours, but they’re pretty special cases. If you’re in a super rush, the best thing to do is to email us directly at [email protected] and we’ll try our best to hit your deadline.
Be as creative as you possibly can. Offer something that only you can offer – people love unique stuff. You can’t offer financial rewards or incentives, such as ownership, financial returns (e.g. profit share), cash and cash equivalents or any loan/repayment structure.

No. If you can use our direct credit card payment system to accept credit card payments from anywhere in the world. We use our payment provider Stripe.com to process your payments directly to your bank account. Just follow the prompts when you set up your campaign.

If you do want to use PayPal to accept payments, you’ll need to have either a Premier or Business PayPal account. You can get an account for free over at PayPal. Oh, and if you want to offer your donors the most options possible, you can offer them the choice of using both.

PayPal donations are received immediately into your PayPal account. You can log into your PayPal account and withdraw funds to your linked bank account at any time.

For funds donated through our credit card facility:

  • For Australian and US campaigns, funds are received into your Stripe.com account immediately and transferred to your connected bank account on a 2-day rolling basis. This means that all funds received on one day are transferred in a lump sum 2 days later.
  • For Canada, the UK and other European campaigns, funds are received into your Stripe.com account immediately and transferred to your connected bank account on a 7-day rolling basis. This means that all funds received on one day are transferred in a lump sum 7 days later.

I'm running a campaign on Chuffed.org

Yes, after we've approved your campaign, you can keep on editing it. We strongly discourage changing the substance of the campaign after you've launched, but you can change perks, update content, add videos and more, to keep it fresh and dynamic.

Of course. They are your donors after all. You can access real-time data on your donors at any time by logging into your Chuffed.org account, choosing your campaign and then clicking on 'Donor Data'.

You can also download everything as a CSV file if you need to upload the data into your donor management system.

Yes indeed. All you have to do is log into your Chuffed.org account, choose your campaign and then click on 'Message Supporters'.

You can compose your message, add images and then send your update to all your current supporters. You can continue to do this even after your campaign finishes.

We issue a donation receipt email and a PDF invoice to every donor on Chuffed.org. For Australian organisations, who are Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR), we can issue tax deductible receipts which meet the Australian Tax Office guidelines automatically from our system, saving you the hassle of doing so yourself.

Yes. Just log into your Chuffed.org account, choose your campaign and click on 'Add Offline Donation'.

Note that you must have received the donation prior to adding it to your page. These donations will show on your supporter tab with a marker indicating that they were received offline and your total will have an asterix with the total amount added offline marked on your page. Also, your offline donations should not be greater than the amounts you've received through the platform.

Yes. Sometimes there are more than one person involved in creating your campaign and you want them acknowledged on your page. This is really simple on Chuffed.org.

Just log into your Chuffed.org account, choose your campaign and click on 'Add Team Members'. You'll need to tell us their name and email address. They'll be sent an email notifying them that they've been added to your campaign.

Note that they will be able to edit your campaign and will be displayed in the Team Member section of your campaign page. To change their display picture on your campaign page, they'll need to log in and update their profile picture in their Chuffed.org account.

Unfortunately the default donation amounts are set the same across the entire Chuffed.org platform and cannot be changed.
You can choose to collect the addresses of your donors. This can be useful if you have to deliver perks to them following your campaign or you need to collect them to meet donor disclosure rules. We do not recommend collecting addresses unless you absolutely have to.
The first thing to try is to reset your password here. You'll be sent an email with a link you can follow to reset your password. If that doesn't work, just contact us and we'll take a look.
